Rapid Prototyping Experiment

project ideation & making: < 1 day

The initial idea was to realise a zoetrope (a device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid succession of static pictures) with LEDS on various frames to give light and colours to the resulting animation.

Given the limited time (less than one day) only part of the project was prototyped, focussing on how to switch on LEDs using a spinning motion.

The mechanism is quite simple with a circuit using conductive fabrics (ripstop silver) on a disk and on the arm of the record player (copper tape and silverized lycra). When the arm touches the conductive material on the disk, it closes the circuit and turns on the LED.

The learning from this exploration was how to exploit the electric properties of materials and the quick prototyping process in itself.
